Introduction to Bird Watching

What is this hobby termed as "Bird Watching?" Yes, Birding, an alternative way of calling the past time is getting very popular. This is the time where one is concerned with the observation and study of birds. We get acquainted and understand fully one of natural wonderful gifts. To study them on our own, to discover how they lived and survive in the same neighbor as ourselves. A non-intrusive form of knowing your "neighbors" well, respect and help them to live a proper life. The meaning of their songs. Are you aware that our environment also attracts visitors at certain times of the years?

Birds like human, they too, have their families growing. Then bird watcher  themselves learn how these birds could cope with hostile environment to bring out their young amidst of adversaries. Remember that the community service that most birds do, by their presence? They brighten up our whole neighborhood with songs and colors. Think of the times when you were overseas. Accidentally you saw so many birds flying around, an unexpected scene you don't recall seeing at home. Did that get your mind started pondering? That in our tropical rain forest, there must be so many kinds of unusual plants, insects and animals. Like! "How nice if I am able to identify them or even recognize their uniqueness".

 Surprisingly, our education system and our Asian way of upbringing, it was never emphasized to us, inculcated into us to love nature. Hence we developed a tendency to fear rather than be curious about living things beyond the pets we keep inside our house. Never mind about that. Let the present need for a hobby, pushes you into that awareness. To continue. One or some reasons to go birding. The awareness to take time off and start some sustainable hobby as past times is getting trendy. Everyone has almost the same reason. To get away from the monotony of mundane living. Remember - like all hobbies, once in it, you may think that working on it means keeping you focus on a passion. No, you get other fringe benefits as well. You will get to meet new friends and lots of company. Once strangers and soon would be your friend to share the fun with you. One more - doing "bird" talk, an instant conversational topics all the times. Birding is a very simple hobby that you can do it all alone. At a pace, your time and budget permit. The most active times of the year for birding in Malaysia is between the months of August and February. It is during this period that the greatest variety of birds may be seen. Many species that normally do not nest in our forest and parks may yet be observed. This is the time, the migrants making their way south. Staying temporary or just passing through. One peak period for birders

How to start Birding -  Do you know that there are birds around your house? Have you really stop - take a second look at them? If not, start today! See how many different kinds of birds can you can catalogue. And asked around if any one of your friends could make out their types. Very likely, you will get a blank face. Some may even think that you are out of your head. That's our society! Now! don't that give you a good reason to be one of those better informed individuals. Early morning is typically the busiest time of the day for birding. Most birds like humans would start the day to search most actively for food. Here is your best chance and easier for you to find and observe.

Learn about birds as where the birds would be seen? Start noting down the shape of the body and colors of the feathers. Developed a habit of recording.

Next, you have to learn - the names of the principal parts of the birds. Start with the major parts like head, beak, tail, breast, crown and rump. Needless to say, you must have your personal guide books as well.

Tools -Equipment & basic know-how  People can bird watch almost anywhere - in public parks, in one's own backyard, jungle or along the shorelines. So it is best start your hobby by learning how to identify birds. By your own observations and guided by a book. AND not the other way round. Many hobbyist photographers use birds as an object. They shoot the bird pictures by chance and then ask the first available birder to attach names to them. That's is a No! No!. You will never learn this way. See you have no intention on learning about birds.

For a start, I would say that the best way is to go out to the field with a blank template of a bird silhouette in outline. Each time you see one, quickly note and starting recording details on that template. Colors, tails and beak etc. For this, we now go to the next "must" to assist you in identifying? Binoculars - This actually lead you into staring at the birds through the glasses. You have focused and getting a better impression. But, you may need to see the same type of birds for a while. Long duration each time to study. Here, get a good pair good binoculars. Not just any type nor the other extreme end, the state of the art expensive type. Learn to handle it well and start enjoying watching the same type of birds. Like peeping at their private lives. Not just once, but perhaps over several sightings to get one meaningful description. Of course, photographs would flag out all details and a more effective means than a template. Be careful with photographs too, there are also pitfalls. I still advocate for the hard way of learning -the template. Either way- back home, you will compare these details with the Field guide.

Most field guide, like reference book contains the details. Just too much information and confusing. Then for beginner, choose a book that specifically contains birds in your own domain. e.g. a Malaysian guide rather than a South-east Asian guide. There are 2 kinds of "bird" books. A photographic guide and a field guide. There are photographic guide books that include one specific page detailing various silhouette of birds. A new and  potential birder will find this hint helpful. Matching your images and the silhouette you think more appropriate to the type of birds, newbie can on their own narrow down the browsing to more likely pages. That likelihood with the colors recorded, you can now almost zero into a small group of birds. As you get along, you will feel more confident with knowledge of some know how & find the identification less tedious and less frustrating.

 Tricks of spotting birds  - Birding can is actually a quiet and relaxed outdoor sport. Critical aim is to spend time with nature where the birds are. Where you are going to, have in mind the birds that you would most likely to meet up with. Do not discard the chance to the birds that you have seen before, but know them well. Not until there are others that you think are some birds new to you. These are the basic pointers. Seek out that habit as to how you can get interested in birds. Need not hurry, as new types of birds will occasionally fly into your area of watching. Or you will be visiting another habitats nearby, once in a while. The birds in these places will keep you busy. Learn what you can do to keep yourself busy. What make you feel satisfied?

But I can firmly advise you as to what you should not do!

Meaning - do not work yourself into having the need into scoring and seek out rare birds. You will continuously hear of other seasoned birders traveling long distances to see a new species to add their "lists". But do you know that most of them have not sit down and draw up a formal list of birds they have seen so far. One they called their own "Bird List". They are merely claiming "lifers" through their recollection. Well, very few do have a National List or district list. They appear serious. But they too are just following an act of ticking off birds names as lifer. Such act do not make them a real birder. Because of these going-ons, in Great Britain, these "birders" are better described by the light-hearted slang term of twitchers.

On odd occasions, it is inevitable that news of a rare bird e.g. Frogmouth was sighted, the frenzy among the community begins.

Photography helps in birding. For years the cost of good cameras and long lenses confined this mode to semi-professionals. Today DSLR cameras becomes affordable to many. Then Digiscoping caught the uncertain users as a cheap way of getting good pictures. Photography- with DSLR or Digiscoping are of dissimilar discipline. Requiring different skills and timing which again done in another way away from birding. Photographs are good records specifically under some circumstances as an extension, but never as an important tool for birding. Note book  is more important and essential tool in birding is too record your observations. How trivial these opinions may seem, remember that birding is an experience and a process in developing into a skills. An expertise that can only derive from records made during sightings or of making notations on an unusual bird to assist with later identification. So to sum this short explanation, make it a point to carry a small notebook on field trips. Even if you plan to transfer the information to a more permanent bird watching journal later on. Example of a very basic record. From the first record like bird list of your own garden, you may want to make a list of the birds you see on each outing, in each place, and in total.

  Clothing  should be informal and comfortable. Long trousers, sleeves shirt is preferable to keep away mosquitoes and sun rays. Avoid bright light colors or gaudy designs. Good walking shoes should be worn. Find out where you are going to. Match your shoes with the terrain. Sometimes bringing repellents is imperative. Timing. Though more often than not, it is the rule of the thumb that its best you have to be up and out by the crack of dawn to get better results. But, the location that you are going to do make a huge difference to what you will see. Read field reports by others to prepare yourself.

Needs more guidance as to "How to go birding?" Field practices - Step 1 - Meeting up with those birds you are seeing in your garden or around your house may be erratic. They are there, perhaps, fixed time of the day. Or when you least expect them. Either way you will learn quickly what you should doing. What about the next step, going to some untested territory, like the jungle? You are not there every day. When trying to observe birds in forest there are at least three methods of you can adopt. One can walk along a path slowly and quietly, hoping to come across birds before they sense your presence. Alternatively, one can rush through a section of forest, with consequent noise, with the hope of spotting the birds before they have flown off. Second stance is to wait patiently in a concealed position for birds to appear. Whichever you choose, it is best you read and understand, what birds are you expecting? Which part of the forest these birds are likely to be. e.g. lower or upper storey, in the bare branches or hidden among foliages. So, a lot will depend on the habitat and species and numbers of birds in the area.

Having located a bird, always keep your eyes on it at the time getting your binoculars to your eyes. So often you may be walking a long time in the forest without seeing any bird. Suddenly, a 'bird wave' comes right into your face. Then you are taken by surprises of the many types of birds that appear at one time and all over the place. What then? Identify and count species, notes of species unknown to you or disputing with yourself with on the spot ID-ing. Clear your mind and decide on a strategy.

Third way. You may even start the next step of birding. Collecting bird calls with a small cassette recorder. It is no secret that many seasoned birders do bring along pre-recorded copies of bird calls. These are used to attract individuals to the species' call. In the way the chance of seeing these intended birds responding is improved. Or at least, you may simply verify their presence through their calls in response.

All in all, make it a good habit, research and good planning is critical to the results of a field trip. After the initial exhaustive training sessions, you will find subsequent outings getting much easier and more productive. Then you decide on the level of birding that you wish to get involved. Progress into birding depended on so many factors and personal aspiration. I just continue rattling away to let you have a peep as the type of scenarios that one likely to see as more progress is made.

Progression - Step 2  I have touched on recorded sounds. That's a short cut. When you are proficient then you can stalk the birds by making bird like calls yourself. Beside making bird calls, what about simulating natural sounds caused by birds. So another common stalking trick is to make bird-like noises.  You will soon find out, as part of your own learning processes, when and with which birds it works and when doesn’t always work. When it does, you will be well rewarded and happy with the experiences. When you know of those little tricks, when it does, "Birding" is very successful

I remembered the experiences of the days when I was fishing. In finding  strange new places I was unable to understand the preferences of fishes there. I inculcated their eating habits by giving them food that I have. Same trick can be applied for the birds. Unlike fishes, it may be more difficult to condition birds feeding habits. But we could give them something that they need, water. Like any animal, the bird will be thirsty.  If you offer a bird bath or two, a renewable source of water alongside your food, you’ll never know what results this trick may bring. But it does take you one step ahead in your hobby. And this is not a new idea of mine. A couple of hotels in Frasers Hills are already adopting this strategy.

If the birds do response and take up your offer, you will have another source of information,  enjoy wild bird watching in its original habitat. The exotic tropical forest is a good lure to many bird species. Their unannounced presence will surprise and amaze you every new season.

Monitoring targets - Activities that few birders get engaged with. Preparing Bird List, it is useful to record maximum numbers of each species you have seen at each site. Besides that, on each occasion the place is visited, you can compare numbers and trends. This matching can be done with your own list and with lists done by others. This counting of the species in the forest to assess their population, serve many of your own needs. It is important that observations of birds are complete and accurate. It is rewarding as you truly understand the bird life in the areas you are working with. Finding a rare or unusual species may be something out of the norm. There is a new awareness that with changing pattern of birds lifestyle, new inter-district migration pattern is becoming common happenings. Perhaps beside factor such as the availability of food sources, the changing weather and destruction of habitats due to rapid urbanization are new contributors. With good data, you could substantiate the discovery of new species or new patterns. As a guide, observations should include:

  • Date, time, location, weather;

  • Type of habitat, including altitude;

  • Description of bird, including size, shape, color and pattern of plumage and bare parts;

  • Behavior of bird: feeding where and in which storey, vocalizations, type of flight, gait and stance;

  • Details of binoculars or telescope used and distance from bird

If you are not one of those who like to get involved in academic matters, then you could travel using bird watching as a theme. There are thousands of bird watching trips around the world. Get to know birders in countries around Malaysia. Surely on weekends you will find hundreds of bird watchers gathering at their local nature preserve, or hiking trails. They may even have birding calendars, that you may decided to participate. If you are looking for an extended bird watching trip you should consider an organized tour.

Self rewarding - Backyard bird watching is one of the most relaxing and inexpensive hobbies. You can do it along with family and friends. It is fun and at the same time, educating. You can learn a great deal about your environment and survival from backyard bird watching. Backyard bird watching, when done seriously will lead you into keeping a journal to record all types of birds you see in and their different behavior as well. It is fascinating to go through the pages of your journal each year and observe some of the same birds returning at almost the exact same time of the year. For places beyond your own garden, there are the nearby locations like Parks. With the varied habitats and vegetations, your short list will immediately ballooned into a much larger Bird List of the parks.

This year 2007, so much mails were posted about the sightings of the first arrivals of each winter visitors. Without doubts all of us find ourselves waiting for them. Having our own records, predicting the time of the year, by the types of birds you see in areas very near to where you live. After attending the talk by Dr. David Wells, I am convinced that each month we read about known species appearing a little bit further south or north. Birds that were previously not spotted in our area are now gradually seen. Now I am hooked. Can vouch that birds are fascinating creatures to observe. As retiree with plenty of time l find myself planning for bird watching trips. Now if my wife enjoys the same backyard bird watching hobby as I do, sometimes she does, then I also have an instant partner.

Conserve nature & help society -  With time on your hand, you could write WebPages. Surely at times you will also come across some scenes involving birds that may be interesting. Related to those bird watching, you could publish such observations. Your bird watching hobby can easily turn into a professional career if you truly enjoy it and wish to pursue that line. There are many endangered species of birds that are being followed in order to ensure that they don’t become extinct in the country and around the world.
